How To Replace ABS Parts by Bond Mejeh

Replacing an ABS relay or controller is not a job for total novice mechanic. If you do not feel comfortable with general auto repairs, you may wish to seek the advice or services of someone else. On the other hand, if you have had your fair share of shade-tree mechanic jobs, you should be able to tackle this replacement job.

Anytime you work with a car's electrical system, always disconnect your negative battery terminal. By doing so, you will avoid causing any damage to your electrical system.

The brains behind the traction control and ABS systems are housed inside a plastic shield. The shield serves to protect the system from mice, moisture and the elements. This protective shield is usually located inside the passenger compartment or under the hood. It's location depends on the on the make or model of the vehicle. In some cases, it may also be found behind an exposed access panel somewhere under the dashboard.

Once you find the ABS housing unit, you will discover that it's cover is held in place with clips or screws. You will need to remove this cover, exposing the fuses and related electrical components inside. With the cover off, locate the ABS block, and remove it. If you are unable to tell which part is the ABS, look at the new part you have just purchased and compare it to the existing ensemble.

Before you pull any wires, look at how the ABS is set up. Be sure to take careful notes. For example, if a bundle of smaller wires are covered by a batch of larger wires, you may need to make notes or simple drawings to help you remember how to reassemble them later on. Taking a digital picture before anything is disconnected would be helpful as well. A job that seems simple can easily get very confusing later.

Remove all of the wires from the unit. Remove the malfunctioning ABS controller by sliding it up and out. Now slide the new unit in. Make sure that none of the wiring is in the way before the ABS unit is pressed into place. Reassemble all of the wires, harness plugs, and screws exactly the same way as they were removed. Reinstall the protective outer cover. Finally, reconnect the battery.

Depending on your personal experience in auto repair, this may rank on the intermediate level.
